Surface Cracks vs. Structural Failure: How to Tell the Difference
Not all concrete cracks are created equal. Knowing what you are looking at can save you from spending money on useless repairs. Before you call a contractor, grab a few items from your house, head out to your driveway, and perform these three quick tests:
- 1. The #2 Pencil Test (Testing for Width): Take a standard yellow #2 pencil and lay it horizontally against the crack. A standard pencil is just over a quarter-inch thick. If the pencil fits down inside the gap, you have a structural failure. This indicates that the dirt and stone subgrade beneath the slab has physically pulled apart or washed away.
- 2. The Coin Slide Test (Testing for Heaving): Place a quarter flat on the concrete and slide it across the crack. If the coin catches on a lip because one side of the crack sits higher than the other, your slab is "heaving." This is a definitive sign that Indiana's freeze-thaw cycles have penetrated the foundation, freezing and pushing the concrete upward.
- 3. The Water Pitcher Test (Testing for Sunken Slabs): Pour a pitcher of water directly over a heavily cracked section. If the water pools in a puddle rather than naturally draining off the side of the driveway, the foundation underneath has collapsed or settled, leaving the concrete completely unsupported.

If your driveway fails any of these three tests, patching is a waste of money. The foundation is compromised, and you need a full tear-out and replacement.
If the cracks are so tight that you cannot even slide a piece of paper into them, you are likely looking at Hairline Shrinkage Cracks. As concrete cures and hardens, it naturally shrinks slightly, which can cause very thin hairline cracks. These are a normal part of the curing process and do not impact the structural integrity of the slab.
